What are the Essential Bonsai Tools in Grooming of Bonsai Trees?

bonsai trees

When it comes to cultivation of bonsai trees, there are few essential bonsai tools that you need and only the right ones will assist in grooming a healthy bonsai plant. The choices for bonsai tools are varied and many but once you are informed of the relevant ones to use, selecting the proper tools will be a cinch.

There are a few basic bonsai tools that you need and a pair of scissors is necessary but remember that the scissors used for cutting bonsai branches and roots is different from ordinary one. The pair of scissors is designed carefully to suit the use on bonsai and will not cause damages to the plant even when you are pruning and cutting the branches.

Next on the line is the branch cutter that will be very useful in cutting off small branches. The branch cutter will come in useful when you are developing the bonsai plant from shrubs or an older bonsai plant when the pair of scissors will not suffice.

Other essential bonsai tools in the grooming of healthy and beautiful bonsais are the concave pruner. This sort of tool will result in shearing of branches to heal in double quick time than just an ordinary garden scissors. To aid precision cutting, concave pruner is a relevant bonsai tool.

In the event that you need to trim small branches, buds and leaves, bud scissors is very useful as their blades are small enough to control it and assist in trimming closely. For bonsai wire cutters, the difference between them and those normal one are that it is smaller with pointed edges to shear the branches with precision. The design is done in such a way that the nip of the wire cutters will not remove the branches that are wired as they so small that you can easily trim them.

There are also the root hook and the knob cutter with the knob cutter being use to get rid of outwardly projected stubs or wood in order to shape the trunk the way you like it. Besides that, you can form the root and the roughest parts of the trunk to whatever shapes that you can envision. Root hook is especially useful to untangle roots when repotting. In addition to, the root cutter and saw form an essential part of the bonsai tools kit as they will make the pruning of the roots more easily as well as forming of the bonsai plants.

As bonsai tools will ease the process of cultivating a healthy plant, it is vital that you take care of your bonsai tools so as to prolong their life as well as saving you lots of headaches. When bonsai tools rusted and blunt, you will expend more effort in pruning and shaping the bonsai plant and the end result will not be as good. Therefore proper care is essential so as not to have to replace tools frequently.

Bonsai tools are a necessity in the cultivation of healthy and beautiful bonsai and with lesser effort. Do not scrimp when it comes to choosing the basic bonsai tools that will enable more accurate and precise cutting and shaping of the bonsai trees.

Bonsai Tree Care Tips ? Watering

Posted by admin on May 13, 2010 in Uncategorized

bonsai trees

With limited space and small amount of soil in a bonsai pot, regular attention is needed to ensure the tree is regularly watered. Sun, excessive heat and exposure to wind can dry out the soil in a short period of time. Hence, moisture levels should be monitored regularly.

Here are some tree care tips on watering:

During winter, if the trees are kept outside where rain can water them, then you need not worry about watering them, except when the weather is hot or there is little rain. During summer the plants need to be watered several times a week. During very hot periods, it is advised to water the tree atleast twice daily. It is also suggested to move the trees into shade. If the soil appears to be drying excessively fast, group the pots together so that the foliage creates a canopy to help shade the soil and keep it cooler. Clay pots allow additional evaporation from the sides of the pots and watering must be done more often. If there are two or three bonsai trees, you can use a watering can with a fine hose to water the soil and roots. But if you have a large number of bonsai trees, located at certain distance from each other in the garden, then you can invest in a drip irrigation system. If you are away from home most of the time, then it is a good idea to consider an automatic drip irrigation system or automatic watering system for Bonsai trees. The timers in the irrigation system can be set so that the bonsai are watered every day in the summer and every three days in the winter.

Bonsai Trees For House And Garden

bonsai trees

What plants, other than ferns and cut-leaf maples, would you recommend to be included in a japanese garden? There is a great variety of plants that could be used in a japanese garden. It depends on what type of garden you have in mind. Japanese gardens have evolved from primitive “Tei” gardens, to gardens that were influenced by the Sung and Tang Dinasties.

These gardens were very sumptuous and depicted dramatic landscape features. There were also Buddhist gardens that depicted paradise on earth. Influenced by the tea cerimony and its aesthetics, the military lords of feudal Japan, comissioned some very interesting gardens that still exist. My favorites are the Zen gardens and their simplicity. As you can see, there are many different types of japanese gardens, and they could use many different types of plants and materials.

Most all japanese gardens are use as a place of peace and quite. A way for the gardener to get out of the world and just enjoy sometime to themselves and there family. A lot of gardeners take a lot of pride in there garden. There garden reflects the way the gardener sees or feels like when they go out into there garden. A lot of monks and buddhist spend a lot of time in there gardens cleaning and just enjoying the great gifts that they were given. They even belive that if you listen hard enough you can hear the plants talking to you.

Bonsai refers to the miniaturizing of a plant, but it does not identify the type of plant that it is. There are hundreds of different types of bonsai plants. All of the bonsai plants out there never have the same name, but the only thing that they do have in common is that they are from the bonsai family. A complete description of the plant – leaf dimensions, leaf color, number of stems growing from the soil, does the stem branch or grow straight, does it have bark, and any other distinguishing characteristics that would ID your plant.

There are many types of bonsai trees out there for example: Madagascar palm bonsai tree, jade bonsai, and azalea bonsai. Bonsais are rarely easy and nearly always very expensive – and profitable! Unlike many bonsais, a Jade can survive as a houseplant. Bonsais are potted in a variety of different containers of different sizes and shape and with varied soil compositions.

But not all jade bonsai are the same. Having good inforamtion on the type of bonsai and what is need for it is something you can ask where you go and get your plants from, take inforamtion off the internet, look at books on bonsais, or you can talk to another gardener about it.

Azaleas Bonsai are tough to keep because Azaleas do not tolerate dryness and Bonsais have little soil and small pots so they dry out quickly. That means you may have to water your Azalea every day or two, although I cannot be sure of that without knowing the size and other factors. The withering that you mentioned is probably due to excessive soil dryness.

In addition, your Azalea needs at least a few hours of direct sun every day and it prefers cool temperatures. It may do better outside in a cool semi-shaded area during the warmer months. In any case, this is not an easy plant as it is very unforgiving of any lapses in watering, light or temperature.

The presence of fungus gnats is a good indication that the soil is staying too moist and the roots are rotting. The fungus gnat larvae feed on the decaying roots. I cannot say just how often your Bonsai should be watered, but is is apparent that you are watering too frequently. I suggest watering no more than twice per week as long as there is no evidence that the plant is wilting. This will help curb the root rot which, unlike the gnats, will kill the plant.

Adult fungus gnats fly around and are an annoyance, but they are not harmful to people. Each gnat lives for about 5 days. The trick is to get rid of the next generation – the gnat larvae that live in the top layer of the soil. Try to keep the soil as dry as possible. Remove all loose soil and rocks from the surface and place 1/2 inch slices of raw potato on the surface of the soil. These potato slices will attract the gnat larvae.

After a day or so, discard the slices along with the larvae inside. Repeat this until there are no more larvae in the potato. You just need to be a little more careful about how much water you give your bonsai after all the larvae are gone. Make sure that you do keep you bonsai tree in the sun.

No Relationship Between Bonsai Kitten And Bonsai Trees. Bonsai Cats – Just Fiction

Posted by admin on May 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

bonsai trees

The bonsaikitten.com scandal. Raising bonsai cats is just a joke; bonsai trees are reality and an Art.

The depictions and pictures on raising bonsai cats on the website bonsaikitten.com are obviously just jokes; Nature cannot be forced to impossibilities.

Basically the articles on the website talk about little kittens put in an angular shaped glass, and after a time the kittens grow up into bonsai cats of angular shape.

The website details the technological process, illustrated with manipulated texts and pictures. All what we see there is false, just a nightmare of a sick mind.

Animal protecting organizations and people passionately protest against this website, but even FBI cannot do anything, the website still has been existing. The American student who has created it under a false name is unknown. It is to be feared that credulous people or children could try the first steps of producing bonsai kittens.

A huge number of protesting and circulars have been published in order to protect bonsai kitten and against the website. Endeavors to put a “Just a joke” notice on the bonsai kitten website proved to be unsuccessful.

In opposite of the theory of bonsai kitten producing the tradition and culture of bonsai trees reach back to more thousand years. It origins from China. Later Japanese monks took it to their homeland.

Japanese masters raised it to high artistic levels. The culture of bonsai arrived to Europe a couple of centuries ago, and is spreading with an undiminished energy. Bonsai is the art of shaping plants. The desire for representation of Nature through human eyes rise in every people who love plants and nature.

Let’s keep in mind that our garden and plant culture attracts more and more people. The plants in our environment need continuous nourishing, pruning, dressing in order to avoid our garden and court to change into a jungle. Here rises the question: when we cut the grass or hedge, when we prune the fruit trees, do we feel pity for causing pains to our plants?

NO.

All these are maintaining and revitalizing operations. These make our plants denser, well-arranged and more aesthetic, pleasing. Bonsai is about forming plants so that who views them could feel a positive experience through realities, all this on an artistic level. Let’s compare the reality of the bonsai trees with the unhealthy, psychopathological theory on bonsai kittens, and we’ll see what is the relationship between them.

NOTHING.

Bonsai is a cared and cherished treasure for their master and owner, not like the kitten who would be forced into a glass and tormented there.

Bonsai is an expression for a noble thing, and should not been used for camouflaging a dirty and vile phantasmagoria. Bonsai is an art, while “bonsai” kitten is just an aberrated nightmare.

bonsai trees

While the origins of how to create and nurture a bonsai tree come from China the actual name of these potted trees comes from Japan, in fact the word bonsai refers to a small potted tree. The cultivation of such beautiful trees was actually started by wealthy Chinese people who lived during the Han Dynasty which was famous because it lasted for about 400 years in many of the arts flourished during this period.

The Art of miniaturizing this beautiful trees was passed on from generation to generation and continued in other countries such as Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The process of miniaturizing these plans is actually very intricate due to the fact that they are not naturally small, in other words the seeds and plants used to create bonsai trees are not genetically dwarf, instead their size is modified through pruning and what they use of wires.

Literature which describes the entire principle of a miniature garden was developed by the Japanese monk Kokan Shiren, these principles included what is called bonseki which is the principle of creating miniature landscapes on black lacquer with the use of stones, pebbles and other materials.

The stick and yet beautiful shapes of traditional bonsai trees are actually achieved through techniques applied during the process of cultivation, the two most popular techniques used to create beautiful bonsai trees are called jin and shari. The first method which is known as “jin” consists of removing the bark from an entire tree branch in order to create the illusion of a snag of deadwood, the physical appearance of the tree changes as this technique is applied. This technique which is called “shari” involves stripping bark from areas of the trunk which emulates the look of natural scarring which is normally acquired by trees after it loses one of its limbs or its stroke by a lightning.

Not every type of seed can be used in order to create a beautiful looking bonsai tree, the best seeds used to create these trees are: Trident maple seed, hedge maple, field maple, Japanese maple, vine maple, red maple, Barberry, strawberry tree, Bougainvillea, Cedar, Hinoki Cypress, Fig, ginkgo, olive tree, etc.

The list shown above only includes a few of the many types of seed and trees which are actually perfect for bonsai tree cultivation and the appearance will obviously change from one type of tree to another. Due to the many physical differences between one tree to another those who have adopted the creation of bonsai trees as a pastime have also decided to create entire miniature gardens using different types of bonsai trees.

Tips For Watering Bonsai Trees

Posted by admin on May 8, 2010 in Uncategorized

bonsai trees

No plant can survive without water and the need is even greater for bonsai trees. They are grown in shallow containers with little soil and rely on rain and artificial watering for their moisture

Most bonsai trees that die do so from a lack of water or from being in low humidity for too long. They rely on water to grow as the water is absorbed from the compost to the roots and then the nutrients are distributed throughout the tree. If water is not given so that these important processes can ocurr the the tree will die.

There are a number of factors which will determine how much water bonsai trees require:

Some species will require more water than others

Different soils will dry out at different rates

Small pots may dry out more quickly than larger pots and what the pot is made of will also play a part in how quickly it dries out

Plants whose roots a fully grown will absorb more water than younger trees with smaller roots.

What you need to do is take the time to observe and get to know your individual bonsai trees. As you become familiar with them you will learn when they need water by looking at the soil and the color and growth of the leaves. Each tree should be checked regularly and watered when required. Never allow the soil to dry out completely.

Watering is usually required once or twice a day in summer and maybe every three or four days in winter. Even though there may have been some rain, don’t assume that it will have been enough for the tree as it may only have dampened the surface of the soil. Once again, you need to check each plant, testing the soil about an inch below the surface; you can use a water meter to help you or just poke your finger into the soil.

Morning is the best time of day to water the bonsais so they are ready for the heat of the day. Don’t just moisten the soil but give them a thorough soaking so that the whole container is wet and there are no dry spots where the roots could die. In Japan they often water all the trees then go back to the beginning and water them all again to ensure the job is done correctly. Allow the water to drip out of the bottom of the pot and you may need to prop it up slightly so that it all drains away.

Gentle watering is required; if you use an ordinary garden hose you may find the flow of water too stong and the soil will be washed away. Make sure to use a fine mist or a watering can with a fine rose so as not to disturb the soil. As well as watering the soil you can also spray the foliage with water. The leaves can absorb water and the spray will wash any dust or pollutants away.

However, excessive watering can also damage the bonsai tree; the effects of this will not be immediate but can take some time to become apparent. If the roots are continually surrounted by water then they are unable to absorb air which is essential for a healthy tree. The fine root hairs become suffocated by the excess water, they will die and eventually rot. Of course if the tree cannot get air and nutrients from the roots then the leaves and braches will suffer and also eventually die. In the mean time a sick tree is more susceptible to attack by diseases and insects.

Growing bonsai trees is a fascinating hobby and by using well draining, moisture retaining soil and getting to know your plants you should be able to meet the challenges that watering presents.
